Under what conditions, to what extent, and to what end? In this book, we take a new look at whether, how, and to what extent religious teachings might shape the mindsets and behaviors of citizens and thereby influence their approaches to political engagement. We explore these questions by looking specifically at the content of contemporary Christian sermons in major cities in sub- Saharan Africa, drawing much of our worship service and sermon observation from Nairobi, Kenya and Johannesburg, South Africa. Savannah Dialogues The Savannah Dialogues Platform (SDP) is an Institute for African Development (IAD) digital platform. Its aim is to provide an online platform where academics, researchers, and policy makers exchange views on current political, economic, legal and social issues on African development in line with IAD’s mandate of strengthening and expanding the depth and breadth of African development studies. IAD Spring 2020 conference Africa economic growth showed robust growth until around 2013. Consumer spending was up and investment in infrastructure echoed the commodity-fueled growth sweeping significant portion of the continent. Between 2014 and 2017, however, growth slowed to rates not seen in two decades. Nevertheless, by some accounts, Africa’s economic growth rates are now on a firm footing. Chinese investment have played a major role in this development. 2018 IAD Bulletin The IAD Bulletin is the official annual publication of the Institute for African Development. The 2018 is now available online on the IAD web site or at the IAD offices in 190 Uris Hall. The Bulletin features interns’ essays, mini-grant projects, symposium report, and articles on development. We invite your submission of short articles, updates on your projects/research/publications/achievements – sent to jsb25@cornell.edu Latest News Africa Summer Internship IAD Africa Summer Internship program enhances academic learning by providing students the opportunity to actively engage with individuals and organizations directly involved in policy and program development in Africa. IAD and its partners view placements as an integral part of the students’ education, immersing them in field experiences that seek to achieve awareness of developmental challenges and intercultural understanding. Interns work closely with a supervisor, colleagues and peers on development-related challenges including court efficiency, biofortification, gender and land, nutrition and food security, migration and conservation. IAD Issues in African Development - Spring 2020 Issues in African Development Seminar Series examines critical concerns in contemporary Africa using a different theme each semester. The seminars provide a forum for participants to explore alternative perspectives and exchange ideas. They are also a focal activity for students and faculty interested in African development. In addition, it will prepare students for higher level courses on African economic, social and political development. The presentations are designed for students who are interested in the Africa and development, and Africa’s place in global studies, want to know about the peoples, cultures and societies that call Africa home, and explore development theories and alternate viewpoints on development. IAD Graduate Fellows 2016-2017 The Institute, in cooperation with other programs and organizations, awards several fellowships each year to African students admitted to graduate study at Cornell University.
